On Saturday, October 15, the Felix’s Casa team had the opportunity to connect with our community at the 70th Annual North County Latino Book and Family Festival, held at MiraCosta College. As a newly created Carlsbad Mexican food kitchen focused on serving delicious and authentic food, the Felix’s Casa team appreciated the opportunity to connect with our community at LBFF.

This festival, produced by the Fallbrook-based non-profit Empowering Latino Futures, is put on with the goal of reaching out to Latino families to highlight the importance of literacy as well as promote awareness of college and community resources.

LBFF featured over 100 exhibitors, including authors and resources for education, children, food, and health. LBFF also featured over 30 award-winning authors of works written by or about Latinos in a variety of genres. It also included entertainment, a children’s stage, bilingual activities, workshops, food, and book giveaways.

The 20th anniversary of the film “Real Women Have Curves”, written by Chicana playwright Josefina López, was also celebrated with a screening. Keynote speakers included Josefina López and author Victor Villaseñor. In addition to this, there were appearances by U.S. Rep. Mike Levin, MiraCosta College Superintendent, President, and CEO Sunita Cooke, and San Diego District 5 Supervisor Jim Desmond.

Empowering Latino Futures was launched in Los Angeles in 1997, co-produced by award-winning actor and activist Edward James Olmos.

They have both been with Felix’s since July 2021, where they started as prep cooks and catering staff. They are excited to channel their passion for cooking and love of the food they have been enjoying their whole lives, to create and present our authentic Mexican menu.
