Although the true reason behind Memorial Day is a somber observance, most observances of the holiday recognize this weekend as the unofficial start of the summer. With warm weather, a three-day weekend, and only a few weeks until the end of the typical school year, it’s no surprise that most of us want to enjoy ourselves. And what food goes better with summer celebrations than BBQ and soul food? But where can you go this Memorial Day when you’re looking for the perfect barbecue restaurant to observe this celebration? If you’re in the San Diego area, you can visit us at Felix’s BBQ With Soul!

The History of Memorial Day

Although we’ll definitely talk about what we have to offer for you and your families this Memorial Day, we feel that we’d be remiss if we didn’t first take a moment to discuss the true meaning and origins of the holiday. It’s important to have respect and an understanding for this holiday that is important to many people, even if today we observe the holiday a bit differently than how it was initially observed.

According to “The History of Memorial Day” from KPBS, Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day. This name came from the tradition of decorating graves with items such as flowers, wreaths, and flags. However, this day was not widely observed in the United States until May 20, 1868, when it was used to commemorate soldiers who had sacrificed their lives in the Civil War. The proclamation to observe the holiday for this purpose was made by Gen. John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization made up of Union sailors and soldiers. Just five years later in 1873, New York became the first state to make Memorial Day a legal holiday, and by the late 1800s, several other states had made it a legal holiday as well.

Following World War I, Memorial Day became a day to honor the soldiers who had died in all of the United States’ wars, a meaning that has continued through today. This is also when it became established as a national holiday rather than in individual states. Finally, in 1971, Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which established that Memorial Day would be observed on the last Monday in May.
